Quick thoughts on Boise State following last night's 33-30 win over Virginia Tech, presented unabridged as it was texted between Matt and Ben.
Matt Reese: Boise has good shot of playing for the title and Im not too happy about it
Ben Crook: I understand everyone's frustrations about it, but boise is a good team. And in the scheduling that they had control over they play good teams. In years past we'd get to the end of the year and they're undefeated and we say they system screwed them. This year the system finally rewarded them and it's up to them to take advantage.
MR: I agree with you that boise is a good team. A top 10 program in my opinion. However, the good teams they have played in the past almost always are their first game of the year, or their bowl game. In both cases, they had tons of time to prepare them. If they were in a major conference, i dont think that they could perform well enough week in and week out to go undefeated or even have a one loss season. If they had to go to nebraska, home against A&M, vs colorado, and then to texas in a four week span. I think they would go 2-2 maybe...
BC: That's what I'm saying, it's unfortunate that they are stuck in the wac (right now), but i don't think it diminishes their wins. Remember, the other teams have just as long to prepare. Would i like to see them go through a gauntlet? Of course. But when judging a team in the polls, you can't run off of hypotheticals. You go off the play and results on the field. When do we get our radio show?
MR: In their tough games, yes the other teams have as much time to prepare, and these wins i am not trying to diminish. But if we are trying to find the best team in the nation. I think they should have to play the best, more than once or twice a year...and for reals. We should just send this conversation to espn. (Ed. note: Or put it on the blog)
BC: Again, they do what they can with what they're given. They only have room for one or two good teams, and even then it's a tough time getting those teams to agree to play them. We won't get any more until there's a playoff. Until then, great job boise for taking care of business, they just have to hope that there aren't two undefeated bcs teams
MR: I agree 100% with the playoff. Just take the top 8 bcs teams and boom, champion. And yeah, they do take care of business. I just dont think they deserve a shot at the title without a playoff. Not their fault though
BC: Fair enough. But you're dumb.
MR: No argument from me, however, you are stupid.
All I care about is the fact that they wear blue uniforms on a blue field which has a blue tarp around it above which is a stadium filled with fans wearing blue. Camouflage? Deceit? Trickery? This was pointed out to me in a letter to the editor in this month's Sports Illustrated...your thoughts?
ReplyDeleteNow that you mention it, the sky is blue as well...hmmm I might have to look into this more. Maybe that is the reason they have only emerged as a dominant program recently. You know with the invention of HD tv, people can physically see them now.
ReplyDeleteI just wasnt happy with the officiating that went down in that game...
ReplyDeleteThe only call that really affected the game, in my opinion was the non-call on the block in the back. That greatly changed the difficulty of the Boise drive. Going 55 yards is much easier than going 80 with 1:15 left. I thought it should have been called. The official who made the call was about 5 yards away, he had a much better view than the head official who overturned the call.
ReplyDeleteWatch the block in the back call. When the hit is made, the guy that got hit opens his body to the blocker. This only happens if the blocker caught him from the side or front, impossible if it's a true block in the back. Initially looked like a block in the back, but I think that's what was discussed by the officials when they ended up overruling the call.
ReplyDeletesooo the late hit was cool with you guys? theres no way that defender saw that guy step out and he kept running down the field, was he just suppose to let him score? thats 15 yds of BS imo
ReplyDeleteForgot about that one, not the greatest call to me. Usually they let that go, but the whistle did blow a few seconds before the tackle.
ReplyDeletelike you heard every whistle during a game...
ReplyDeleteThat's why I'm saying they usually let that situation slide. But it was still a hit after the whistle, and even if the whistle hadn't been blown it was close to being a hit out of bounds.
ReplyDeleteI still think that it was a block in the back. However, I can see how it was overturned. Also, I forgot as well about the late hit. I think it was questionable, but the right call. However close he was to the sideline, and how close it was to the whistle, it was still late. That call, I don't have a problem with.
ReplyDeleteMatt - I agree with your Boise comment about being able to prepare for their big games because they face little competition in between. They are very sound and well coached but playing in a tough conference would take away that advantage if they were forced to prepare every week. They are good but not National Championship good in my opinion. And imagine if they had to travel to Happy Valley in front of 110,000 every other year!
