If you haven’t heard by now, (maybe pop on ESPN.com or Yahoo! or any other source of informative media site), Reggie Bush quite possibly will lose his title of “Heisman Trophy” winner for the 2005 college football season. The reason? Well, after reports of his little “income increase” in college were proven to be true (a whole other story, which unfairly led to the current USC players to be punished somehow...), the Heisman Trust have been reported as to rule Bush ineligible for that 2005 season, thus not able to claim his trophy.
Now, if I am not mistaken, the Heisman Trophy is awarded to the best college football player in a given year. That is, BEST PLAYER ON THE FIELD. For the 2005 season, Bush was. Mr. Bush ran the ball 200 times, for 1,740 yards (that is 8.7 yards a carry for all you math nerds out there) and racked up 16 rushing TD’s. Bush also caught 37 passes for 478 yards and 2 touchdowns. Those numbers do not lie. Clearly, Bush had a monstrous season, one in which he earned his trophy, and title of “best college football player.”
This begs the question, in what way does talking to an agent, or getting some under the table funds, or having his parents taken care of affect his play on the field? In my opinion, it doesn’t. I am not saying at all that I think what happened at USC is acceptable, but no matter what happened off of the field, Bush was the best player on the field. Therefore he deserves the Heisman that he already won...five years ago.
If the Heisman Trust does in fact take away Bush’s trophy, one question that has come up is: who to give the title? Some, including Mack Brown, think the title should be given to the runner up in voting. In 2005, it was VInce Young of the University of Texas. Although Young attended my future alma mater (hopefully), and without a doubt had an unbelievable season (leading his team to a National Championship over Bush and USC) he does not deserve to be given the title 5 years down the road. Bush won the Heisman with his play on the field.
Yea, this is pretty dumb, I've always hated this about college sports. I don't understand why they haven't figured out a way to effectively punish the agents (and other such figures) in order to prevent this kinda stuff. AND this is now several years after the fact...i understand it's about priciple at this point but theyre going about this all wrong.
ReplyDeletei just hope Reggie is focused this season, he's gotta bring it home for my fantasy team!
Mr. or Mrs. Anonymous, identify yourself if it pleases you, if not, whatever. I don't think that Bush will be affected by this little incident. I am not sure what the Heisman Trust is trying to accomplish by this. Maybe they just want to make themselves feel like they are holding players "to a higher standard" but that would just be ludicrous. Bush is already in the NFL, making millions, Young the same. This is not going to affect either one of them in the least bit. Everyone knows that Bush won the award with his play.
ReplyDeleteMr. Anonymous was my father's name, just call me Oye. And yeah, I agree with the "higher standard" bit.
