Extreme Makeover: Tim Tebow Edition

Since I am now a member of "the media", I thought it appropriate to say some nice things about Tim Tebow. Or are we supposed to deride him now? I get so confused sometimes...

Tebow, in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft in April, is changing his throwing delivery. He has enlisted the help of four coaches that are helping him adjust his game in order to present a more appealing product to NFL coaches and general managers. He has been roundly criticized all through the previous season and succeeding post-season for his long, looping delivery and inability to take snaps from under center. Tebow has responded by changing the position that he holds the ball from his waist to above his shoulders, along with working on his three- and five-step drops from under center. He is planning to unveil his new look delivery during his pro day on March 17 instead of the scouting combine this week.

This really should come as no surprise, as it was fairly obvious that something was going to have to change if he wanted to become an NFL quarterback, say nothing of becoming a successful one. There are two questions out there: "Will the changes stick?", and "Will the changes help?".

This renovation is being compared to Tiger Woods' (multiple) swing changes, and I think with good reason. Both are extremely competitive personalities who have had enormous success with their previous setup. Tebow is smart enough to realize that his professional career (at the position of his choice, at least) depends on this. Essentially all he will be working on during the weeks ahead, and presumably during the summer and training camp, is drilling the new footwork and delivery so it becomes his new nature.

The changes themselves are simply refining Tebow's mechanics to those of a technically sound quarterback. He has experienced enormous success with his flawed techniques, passing for a 66% completion percentage and 9,285 yards during his stellar collegiate career. Imagine what might happen if his mechanics improve and he starts throwing more conventionally. Those around him have said that they have already noticed an improvement in accuracy, and he is already such a physical and mental specimen.

It was already thought that even without Tebow going through this process that some team out there would take a chance on him as a quarterback. If these changes live up to their billing during his pro day in Florida, expect his draft stock to really start picking up.

  1. I love how members of the media (you douchebags), have been giving him grief for this, lol. He has been working on footwork, and where he holds the ball. He already has a good delivery over the top, but he loops his arm due to his catching the ball at his side from shotgun and having to bring it up. He is learning the habit to take it to his shoulder from under center. So I agree with you that if they stick, and I think they will, his draft stock will rise tremendously.

  2. you're wrong. where he holds the ball isn't from the shotgun, he drops his arm as part of his delivery, which makes for a longer motion.
